4th grade review (March 23-27)

Lab Part 1: Landscape changes + Earthquakes

The surface of the Earth is ever changing, but we learned that some changes happen very quickly and some take millions of years.

1. Brainstorm as many quick and slow Earth surface changes you can think of. Challenge yourself to make three categories, fast changes(changes within minutes, hours or days), Semi-fast changes (weeks, months and years), and slow changes (hundreds, thousands and millions of years). Either discuss with an adult or write them down!

2. Discuss as a family your quake care and prevention plans- do you have an emergency kit? This might be a good time to plan, research what is a quake emergency kit, and which of the items you have already at home and which are needed, to centralize in a safe place.

Lab part 2: Earthquake Engineering

In lab we tested a few structures on our shake table to investigate how long they could withstand an earthquake. Check out this link on Twig science:

If you have wood blocks or Jenga game, put the building on a tray and see how many inches it can move by giving it a pull or a push, without having the blocks fall. Which structure would hold up best against a pretend quake on the tray?

Brainstorm the properties of different building materials (wood, steel). Write down which materials you would use to make an earthquake proof house and why.
