Welcome to Science Lab for the 2013-2014 School Year!!!!

Below is a note that will be sent home with students the 1st week of school.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Cant wait to see you all this year!

Welcome back to Science Lab class!  My name is Linsay Del Rosa and I am the Science Lab teacher for 1st-5th graders.  This is my third year at Bollinger Canyon Elementary teaching Science.  Students will have science lab once a week where we will be focusing on hands on learning including experiments and science related activities.  Below is a schedule for when each grade level has Science Lab:
1st Grade: Monday
2nd Grade: Tuesday
3rd Grade: Friday
4th Grade: Wednesday
5th Grade: Thursday
SDC: Wednesday or Friday

Science Blog
Each week I will be posting information about what each grade level will be working on in Science Lab on this blog.  I will also include a link to a website with activities connected to that week's topic.  I would like all 4th and 5th grade students to spend at least 10 minutes a week reviewing the linked website.  The links are optional for 1st-3rd graders, but they are a great way to review what students have learned in science.  Please check the blog each week for information about what we are working on in class, links to relevant websites, important messages, and any science related community events.

Science Fair
Bollinger Canyon will host our second Science Fair/Science Night.  It will take place at the end of January.  Look for more information to be sent out in October, but please keep this time in mind when planning your school year.  I will also be looking for volunteers to help, so please contact me if you are available.

Teacher Wish List
Please help our class be successful and run smoothly all year long by donating any of the following items.  I can take these items ANY time during the year, especially the experiment materials.  Gift cards are also extremely helpful for me when I have to purchase consumable   items throughout the year.

Classroom Materials:
Pencils
Erasers
Cleaning Wipes
Baby Wipes
Mr. Clean Magic Erasers
Science related books or magazines

Experiment Materials
2 liter soda bottles
Shoe Boxes (need by October)
Borax
Film Canisters
Modeling Clay (various colors)
Soil
Vinegar
Baking Soda
Posterboard
Elmer’s Glue (liquid)
Distilled white vinegar
Rock salt
Corn starch
Aluminum foil
Aluminum or plastic trays
Quart size and gallon size ziploc bags
Plastic wash tubs

Any donations for our garden would also be greatly appreciated!  We can use seeds, shovels, smocks, watering cans, etc.

I will be using tickets during science lab to encourage participation, cooperation, and positive behavior and students can trade in their tickets for prizes.  I am asking for donations for the prize bin, which can include school supplies, stickers, small toys, small games, playing cards, etc.  This is a great way to get rid of gently used items around your house that your family no longer uses that someone else would find rewarding.

I am also looking for volunteers to help in the Science Lab.  My schedule varies each day, so please let me know your availability.  I will have sign up sheets at Back to School Night in each class if you would like to volunteer during your child’s science time.  Please contact me at anytime with any questions.  You can reach me via email at ldelrosa@srvusd.net or via phone at (925) 242-3271

Feel free to stop by the Science Lab (room 601) during Back to School night to see our classroom and learn about specific curriculum for each grade level.
